It could be that the insomnia treatment that works best for you is not a direct treatment of the sleeplessness itself, but a rearrangement of your lifestyle. You may still want to consult a doctor to be sure the insomnia doesn’t indicate another physical problem, but making certain changes to your pre-bedtime habits and even your sleep habits may be the best insomnia remedy of all. This rearrangement is often referred to as “sleep hygiene,” because in a way it cleans up some messy habits that might contribute to insomnia.

The first thing everyone recommends as an effective and natural insomnia remedy is to associate the bed with sleeping, rather than with the insomnia. Many doctors advise that you shouldn’t get into bed if you’re not yet sleepy, and you should get up if you’re still awake after twenty minutes, or if you have insomnia during the night. Grab a book and sit somewhere else with a non-caffeinated drink, as it will be easier to relax if you aren’t lying in bed and fretting about being awake. This may be the most natural insomnia treatment that automatically turns your mind toward sleep when you get into bed.

These are very simple home remedies, yet you’ll be surprised at how effective they can be. Another suggestion is that you establish a routine you perform every night that will trigger your mind to start getting ready to relax and sleep. Going to bed and getting up at the same times every day will train your body to follow in that regular pattern. Before going to bed, the best insomnia remedy might be to have a snack or drink an herbal tea, or perhaps have a warm, relaxing bath. If you do the same things each night, then your mind and body may develop a regular sleeping habit.

Other changes might also provide the best insomnia remedy. Eating, writing or watching TV in bed makes it an activity center and not a place to sleep, so do those things elsewhere. Try not to exercise vigorously within five or six hours of bedtime. Eliminate caffeine, alcohol or nicotine during that period too because those can disturb sleep later in the night. Practicing “sleep hygiene” may be the best possible insomnia cure. Keep to a regular schedule with meals and sleep times, have regular night-time rituals and associate the bed only with sleep. If you do so, then you may conquer your insomnia and sleep much better.
