When choosing a fragrance, whether as part of a fragrance gift set or not, have you ever been confused by the way the perfume is described? There are a variety of fragrance types. Well, a big reason for this our tendency to try to simplify things by using a generic name to cover an umbrella of similar, but different product types. When talking about fragrances, this refers to how pure the content is. Below are the differences between the different types.

Perfume extract. It represents the purest form of fragrance that money can buy. This type contains 15 – 40% (typically 20%) aromatic compounds. This means it will be highest priced too. The are the purest extract that you can buy, with the strongest scent. The scent will last longer than for other fragrance type. Be aware that Eau de Parfum is not the same as perfume; it is limited to 10 – 20% (typically 15%) aromatic compounds.

Eau de Toilette. It typically consists of 5 – 15% aromoatic compounds (typically 15%). It gives the scent, but at an affordable price. For many people Eau de Toilette is perfect for their needs and their pocket.

Eau de Cologne. It contains 3 – 8% aromoatic compounds (typically 5%) and is at the budget end of the market. The strength of the scent is less than that of Perfume and Eau de Toilette. The duration of the scent will be shorter also. Eau de Cologne is typically used to label those fragrances lacking in base notes.

It’s great for people that like to smell good after freshening up or shaving. The concentration is 1 -3%. These make a great gift for teenagers.

Bear these differences in mind when chossing a perfect gift set. Perfume is a great option for someone that you are close to. For someone that is special to you, buy Eau de Parfum. For everyone else, and especially adolescents in their early teen years, you may wish to go for an Eau de Cologne perfume gift set.
