While sensitive skin care is nothing new, the number of people that seem to be suffering is on the increase. Although it may relate to a wide spectrum of general skin complaints it is generally recognized as a hyper-sensitivity to normal everyday conditions. Skin care products that can stop this problem or reduce the effects of it are called sensitive skin care products and labeled as such in stores.

The degree of sensitivity can however vary from person to person and depending on that, the type of skin care procedures may vary too. While skin sensitivity conditions vary, one are where almost everyone has a problem is with soaps, detergents and cleaning compounds.

Even though we can all experience skin damage from our environment and products we use it is often down to the individual tolerance of the person affected. Where a person has skin sensitivity this will obviously become apparent more quickly than someone who does not share this type of skin condition.

Manufacturers are now more aware of what compounds can cause problems and corrective measures are taken where ingredients are replaced with compounds that do not cause problems or the amount of irritant is reduced to acceptable levels. Sensitive skin care products of any type are usually marked as such but if you have very specific concerns then check the side of the container or list of instructions to see if there is anything you should know about.

Even within the range of sensitive skin care products available, choose those that have the minimum of preservatives, colorings and other additives. Skin toners are also to be avoided as the active ingredient is alcohol and this will almost certainly irritate your already sensitive skin further.

Wear protective gloves when doing laundry or other chemical based cleaning and if you are allergic to rubber, you can wear cotton gloves below the rubber ones. A further problem is often caused buy the sun, so use special sunscreen if you intend to spend time in the sun.

Avoiding exposure to dust and other pollutants is also important for sensitive skin care so cover yourself adequately before going out but you can use a hypoallergenic moisturizer as a skin care product if there is none specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Use soap-free and alcohol free cleansers and cleanse your face whenever you return from spending time out doors but do not scrub or exfoliate too hard as it can cause reddishness and even inflammation.

Never leave makeup on for extended periods and wherever possible use hypoallergenic makeup removal products that will not make the skin worse. So as you can see there is much more to consider when looking after sensitive skin, and it is more about being careful with your skin both in terms of sensitive skin care products and protection against environments affects on skin.
