What is referred to as a premium yoga mat usually means an extra thick mat (although not always) or a mat that offers extra support and traction so that you won’t slip. Premium yoga mats are durable and usually will help you with grip and traction. A premium yoga mat may also mean an eco-friendly or organic choice of mat. Most yoga mat lines will have a ‘premium’ yoga mat range.
When it comes to yoga mats, the resounding conclusion one could make is that you really need to try a few different types of mats to find the one that will be perfect for you. Although premium yoga mats are popular, some people still prefer the ’standard’ type of yoga mat or possibly even a cotton yoga mat.
Practicing yoga on a super soft and comfortable mat appeals to many people. Premium or thick yoga mats mean more padding and extra cushioning usually without being too squishy or unstable.
Usually the standard yoga mat size is 1/8-inch.2 mm) and what most people call the ‘thick yoga mat’ is double this at 1/4-inch (6.4 mm). But just to confuse us, some manufacturers refer to their 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) yoga mats as the standard yoga mat size. It makes better sense to refer to the 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) mats as ‘standard’ as there really isn’t anything else that could be used as a yoga mat that would be this thin. When you go shopping for your premium yoga mat, remember that all manufacturer’s seem to have different sizing and thickness standards so select your mat carefully. There are also some other yoga mat sizes bedsies the ones already mentioned. Usually the thickest is 1/2-inch (12.8 mm) which is very soft and thick.
A premium yoga mat is a luxurious choice but have an open-heart and be prepared to trial and error a few mats before you find ‘the one’. There are a few creative ways that you can re-use your old yoga mats so you won’t have to feel guilty about buying a ‘new and improved’ one.
