Are you wondering how you can be positive about your weight loss? Many people ask themselves this question every day. We call this silent conversation that we have with ourselves Self Talk. Self talk can be extremely effective. If you tell yourself something often enough, you will begin to think that it’s for real. If you believe something strongly enough, the tendency is to act that way. Therefore, quite frequently, our thoughts become our reality. You have no chance at succeeding if you consistently tell yourself that you can’t lose weight, which is just one example. The choice is yours when it comes to whether you want to convince yourself that you can lose weight or that you don’t have a chance.

What do you think about your own self-talk? First, see what that little voice in the back of your mind is saying. Is that voice positive and helping you move toward your weight loss goal? Or are you telling yourself bad things that are inhibiting your progress? Remember, even negative self-talk can be changed by positive thinking.

Take a look at these examples of how to change that self-talk into something that’s working for, instead of against, your weight loss.

Some illustrations of a poor internal dialogue are:

* There is no way for me to succeed I haven’t lost any weight this week. My family is overweight so I have no chance at being anything but fat. * I should be going to workout at the gym.

Examples of Positive Self-Talk are:

* I exercised this week and ate healthy, even though the scale doesn’t reflect that. * If I continue to make even these small changes, I’ll hit my weight loss goals really soon. “I know with some habit changes I can lose weight”

* Lots of people are watching what they eat. I’m not alone in choosing healthful, nutritious foods that my body deserves.

* Fun comes in many forms other than eating. My body requires food to work, but that’s it.

You can probably tell that a good internal dialogue will make you feel better about yourself, and break down any obstacles that are keeping you from reaching your goals. While you’re learning this skill, write down your self-talk. You will start to be objective when it comes to thoughts about you and your goals concerning losing weight. You can also use a diary to record a mental inventory of your successes at the end of each day. What did you do right? Stay focused on the positive aspects of your accomplishment, not the negative, and plan how you will make the next day even better. You should congratulate yourself when you achieve something, no matter how insignificant it appears to others. Keep in mind that you will be able to lose weight better by thinking you are able to do it. Many of us have some doubts about reaching our goals, and this is natural. But by replacing our doubts with positive thoughts, we build belief in ourselves. And it is that very belief that will help you reach those goals.
